back to the bottom

the kickstarter has been cancelled. the album has not.

i need to take some time off from this. to breathe, to mourn, to listen to some other damn music for a little while. then i will come back to the project and do everything i can with what limited resources i have. even save up for some new gear myself if i can. learn, grow, and resurface with more to show for myself.

so this blog will be going dark for a little while. how long i can’t say. but i’ll be back and better than ever.

i need your help

sorry to go so long without an update. some personal things got in the way, and i’ve been trying to finish another project before my collaborator moves away.

but without further ado, the kickstarter is live! this is your first opportunity to be a part of the album.

it’s a crime

warning: tech talk ahead.

i upgraded to pro tools 11 a few days ago and it’s been more of a setback than an improvement. first of all, even though my upgrade was free because i’m a student, i had to upgrade mac os x in order to use it, which cost me $20. i’ve been losing money rapidly lately, so $20 isn’t as light a matter as some other times. so now that the program runs, it won’t use any of my wrapped vst plug-ins. a little research seems to show pro tools 11 uses a different plug-in format, so i would need a new vst wrapper, except they’re not allowing people to make them because they want developers to specifically design and distribute plug-ins in their format instead. so in order to keep working on tracks i’ve already started using previously wrapped vst plug-ins, i have to downgrade back to pro tools 10. from the sound of it, that won’t be hard, it’s just annoying and disappointing.

this has really been the nature of pro tools all along, though, all in the name of profit. they finally stopped requiring you to use their brand of physical hardware a couple versions ago, but it seems like for every step toward open compatibility they take another step backward to pain-in-the-ass exclusivity. i don’t know why it’s become so popular in the recording industry. if it wasn’t, i’d probably take this opportunity to shop around for a new daw. except, oh right, i have no money.

new samples are developing slowly, thanks in part to this nonsense. however, taylor shot me her first album art concept and i really like it. you’ll see it soon enough – when the interim album art is ready, this blog will undergo some graphical changes to show it off. i’ve also designed an official logo based on it, which will debut at the same time, and you’ll be able to buy logo t-shirts, too. album art also brings us another step closer to the kickstarter launch.

you gotta get an album out

big news from trent today.

been working. writing the kickstarter, touching up the “empty spaces” demo, picking away at a sample of “welcome to the machine,” might do one from “sheep” instead depending how things go. since i’m planning on buying a bunch of devi ever’s pedals for this i think it’d be cool to offer one as a kickstarter reward. sent her an e-mail about whether she’d do one with custom art for it, we’ll see if she gets back to me.

you can preview the kickstarter here, feel free to leave feedback. it still needs another music sample, some album art, and a video.

what do you want from me

project budget keeps increasing. disturbing trend. part of the problem is i’m planning on doing the fundraising on kickstarter so i need worthwhile rewards to offer backers, and they create an additional expense. the other big part is i have no idea how much studio time this will need.

working on a demo of “welcome to the machine.” i’ve hit a lull, probably means i’m shot for the day.

i put out a craigslist ad about a trent reznor sound-alike, and am combing my facebook friends for session musicians. have a possible guitarist. the vocals will be tough. i’ll probably need to crowdsource the process of finding him.

don’t sit down it’s time to dig another one

started work today on the next demo track, “welcome to the machine.” with a sample of that one and the “empty spaces” sample previously posted, i hope to start publicizing the project. market it to some blogs, get a kickstarter going.

another brick in the wall

consulting some copyright resources, it looks like i ought to get a license from pink floyd to distribute covers of their songs, even for free. or at least ask for permission. i had been seeking out contact information for their publishers, but instead found a website that covers the licensing for you. this unfortunately adds another expense to the project, but means in addition to putting it online for free i could make cds or vinyls of it.

i’m probably going to start a kickstarter or indiegogo account, but want to have a decent sample work to post first. i’ll post it here too, of course. probably first. i still haven’t worked out the rewards i’d offer for a kickstarter, and i don’t even know how indiegogo works, but i’m thinking if i can get funding through something like that i could probably release the album by august 2014.

fingers crossed.
